The Role: What You'll Be Doing
As a Personal Tax Assistant Manager, you'll take a significant step up in responsibility, managing a substantial portfolio of high-net-worth personal tax clients whilst assuming team leadership and supervisory responsibilities. You'll work closely with partners and managers on complex tax planning matters, develop and mentor junior team members, and play a key role in business development initiatives.
This is a genuine leadership role that will prepare you for progression to Manager level within 12-18 months.
Your Key Responsibilities:
Client Portfolio Management & Technical Delivery:
- Managing a portfolio of high-quality personal tax clients including high-net-worth individuals, business owners, professionals, family groups, and trustees
- Preparing and reviewing complex personal tax returns (SA100) and associated schedules including employment income, self-employment, partnership income, property income, investment income, foreign income, and capital gains
- Taking ownership of client relationships as a trusted senior advisor, acting as primary point of contact and building long-term partnerships
- Proactively identifying tax planning opportunities and value-add services to support client objectives and enhance service delivery
Sophisticated Tax Advisory & Planning:
- Providing sophisticated tax planning advice on income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, and trust matters
- Advising on tax-efficient structures for business owners including dividend strategies, profit extraction, remuneration planning, and succession planning
- Leading on capital gains tax planning including principal private residence relief, business asset disposal relief, investors' relief, gift planning, and holdover relief strategies
- Managing inheritance tax planning projects including lifetime gifting strategies, trust planning, estate planning, and will reviews
- Advising on trust taxation including income tax, capital gains tax, and inheritance tax implications for various trust structures
- Supporting clients with complex tax matters including non-domicile taxation, foreign income and gains, and residence and domicile planning
- Staying current with tax legislation changes and proactively advising clients on the impact of new developments including Finance Acts and HMRC guidance updates
HMRC Compliance & Dispute Resolution:
- Leading on complex HMRC enquiries and investigations, including aspect enquiries, full enquiries, and compliance checks
- Preparing comprehensive responses to HMRC with supporting documentation, technical arguments, and legal precedents
- Negotiating settlements with HMRC inspectors and managing client expectations throughout the enquiry process
- Managing disclosure matters including voluntary disclosures and Contractual Disclosure Facility cases
- Advising on penalty mitigation and reasonable excuse arguments
Team Leadership & People Development:
- Supervising, reviewing, and mentoring a team of junior and semi-senior staff (typically 3-5 team members)
- Managing team workflow and work allocation, ensuring appropriate distribution of work based on capability and development needs
- Reviewing work prepared by team members, providing constructive feedback, technical guidance, and coaching
- Conducting performance reviews and development discussions with team members
- Ensuring quality standards are maintained across all client deliverables
- Contributing to recruitment by interviewing candidates and supporting onboarding of new team members
- Leading team training sessions and knowledge-sharing initiatives
Business Development & Practice Growth:
- Supporting business development initiatives by identifying cross-selling opportunities and introducing clients to specialist services (corporate tax, trusts, financial planning, estate planning)
- Contributing to practice growth through excellent client service, generating referrals, and networking with professional introducers
- Building relationships with professional introducers including accountants, solicitors, financial advisers, and wealth managers
- Participating in networking events, seminars, and client presentations
- Contributing to proposals and pitch presentations for new client opportunities
Practice Development & Thought Leadership:
- Contributing to practice development through process improvement, efficiency initiatives, and technology adoption
- Participating in technical committees and knowledge-sharing forums
- Mentoring trainee and newly qualified staff on technical and professional development
- Representing the practice at external events and industry forums
What We're Looking For: Essential Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
- CTA qualified (or ATT qualified with significant post-qualification experience and demonstrable commitment to CTA progression with study support provided)
- Minimum 5-7 years' post-qualification experience in personal tax within a UK accountancy practice environment
- Proven experience managing a complex personal tax client portfolio independently, demonstrating technical competence, client relationship skills, and commercial awareness
- Supervisory or team leadership experience with proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop junior team members
Technical Skills & Knowledge:
- Comprehensive understanding of UK personal tax legislation including income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, and trust taxation
- Extensive experience with tax planning for individuals, business owners, family groups, and trustees
- Strong knowledge of complex tax matters including non-domicile taxation, foreign income and gains, residence and domicile issues, and international tax considerations
- Experience leading on HMRC enquiries including aspect enquiries, full enquiries, and compliance checks
- Knowledge of trust taxation including income tax, capital gains tax, and inheritance tax for various trust structures
- Proficiency with tax software (CCH, Alphatax, or similar platforms)
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel for tax computations, analysis, and modelling
- Understanding of tax-efficient structures including trusts, partnerships, corporate structures, and family investment companies
Leadership & Management Skills:
- Proven supervisory and mentoring capabilities with experience developing junior team members
