Job Description

R&D Tax Senior / Manager
Salary: £45,000–£65,000 + bonus
Location: Glasgow (hybrid)

Advisory-led work with clear progression

If you enjoy the commercial side of tax as much as the technical detail, this is a great opportunity to build a long-term career in R&D tax with our client in Glasgow. You’ll work with a broad range of innovative businesses, help them access valuable R&D reliefs and incentives, and develop into a trusted adviser who can lead client relationships and deliver high-quality claims.

Our client is a leading UK accountancy and business advisory firm with a strong presence across the UK and a varied SME client base.

The opportunity

This hire sits within an established specialist tax team. Depending on your level, you’ll take ownership of your own client portfolio and play a key role in delivering R&D claims and advisory support, while contributing to team performance and workflow planning.

Location and working arrangements

  • Glasgow-based role with hybrid working
  • Flexibility around office attendance (to be discussed at shortlist stage)

What you’ll be doing

R&D claim delivery and technical analysis

  • Deliver end-to-end R&D tax work, including fact-finding, technical assessment, and claim preparation
  • Analyse projects and expenditure against relevant guidance and legislation
  • Draft clear, well-structured technical narratives and supporting documentation
  • Support responses to HMRC queries and ensure claims are robust and well evidenced

Client relationships and advisory support

  • Build trusted relationships with clients through regular contact and well-managed delivery
  • Translate complex technical points into clear, practical advice for non-tax stakeholders
  • Identify opportunities to add value and introduce wider services where appropriate

Portfolio ownership and workflow contribution

  • Manage your own portfolio (size and complexity dependent on level)
  • Contribute to workflow planning and help keep delivery on track across deadlines
  • Support revenue and profitability targets through strong client service and efficient delivery

What we’re looking for

To be considered, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • 3–7+ years’ UK practice experience in R&D tax (or a closely related tax/advisory role with strong R&D exposure)
  • Experience operating at Senior / Assistant Manager / Manager level (or ready to step up)

Strong working knowledge of:

  • UK R&D tax reliefs and incentives (SME and/or large company regimes)
  • Technical report writing and claim documentation
  • Client interviewing / fact-finding to capture qualifying activities and costs
  • Handling or supporting HMRC enquiries and correspondence
  • Confident client-facing skills and the ability to manage expectations and timelines

Qualifications (one of the below is preferred; strong experience is essential):

  • CTA (or part-qualified) and/or ATT

  • ACA / ACCA / CA with relevant tax/R&D experience

Salary and benefits

Salary: £45,000–£65,000 basic (dependent on experience and level) + performance-related bonus

A comprehensive benefits package is expected and is likely to include:

  • Hybrid working and flexible approach to office attendance
  • Enhanced pension and employer contributions
  • Generous annual leave plus bank holidays (with option to buy/sell in some packages)
  • Private medical cover (often available at this level)
  • Life assurance and income protection
  • Professional subscription support and ongoing CPD
  • Clear progression within a specialist tax team, with scope to expand advisory responsibility and portfolio ownership
